Jeonju Digital Project 2000 - 2008 Collection
Instead of selecting directors from Korea, Japan, and China this year’s Jeonju Digital Project section broadens its scope to other regions of Asia. The directors participating this year are as follows: Darezhan Omirbayev, from Kazakhstan, who won the Un Certain Regard award at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival for his film. Eric Khoo, from Singapore, who is starting to garner international attention after his film was chosen as the opening film for Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. And Pen-ek Ratanaruang, from Thailand, whose film starring Korean actress Kang Hye-Jung and Japanese actor Asano Tadanobu was selected for competition at the 2006 Berlin Festival. The interlude segments will connect the three stories together and is directed by Chegy, the director of < Fade into You >.

Kairat, a lonely teacher of mathematic, accidentally meets Askar, along with whom he studied in university. Askar invites him to his home, where Kairat becomes acquainted with Togzhan, the wife of Askar. And he falls in love with her. Though this love was mutual, they couldn’t step over the obstacles already made by their lives. Their emotions delayed. (The script is based on the novel by Chekhov’s < About Love >. Also some bits from his novel < Gooseberry > were included).

< No Day Off > charts four years in the life of Siti, a young woman who leaves her husband and baby boy in a remote village in Sulawesi to work as a maid in Singapore. The narrative unfolds through her perspective and captures her trials and tribulations as she works for three different families in Singapore.
Maids are an emotive issue in Singapore. Two decades ago, they were a rare breed in Singapore. Nowadays, one in seven families has one. And the fact of the matter is many Singaporean families have no idea how to treat their foreign domestic workers. Many people see maids as commodities - they hire them, work them and send them home. They ignore the fact that many of the thousands of foreigners who look after their children, cook and clean for them have left behind their own families. There are many things I hope to explore with - Is Singapore a Maid-to-Order society? Are we really that callous? But more importantly, I hope to explore the person, the individual behind the maid who scrubs our floors, feeds and bathes our children and leaves among us. What are her hopes, dreams? What has she sacrificed?
Twelve Twenty | Pen-ek Ratanaruang | Thai | Drama | 30min
You see her checking in at the opposite check-in counter. You cannot help yourself but falling in love immediately. You get your boarding pass but she is gone. You go through immigration. You buy your wife her favorite perfume. Then you go and relax in the first class lounge waiting to board. You shut your eyes. You wake up and realize you are already on the plane. Your heart stops. She is sitting in the seat next to you, by the window. You and she will spend the next twelve hours and twenty minutes reading, drinking, eating, watching movies and sleeping by each other’s side. Just like a married couple, except that you will not quarrel. In fact, you won’t even have a word with each other. Bon voyage.
Originally, we wanted to explore this micro love story in its real time, which is twelve hours and twenty minutes. But we abandoned the idea when we learnt that this was supposed to be a short film.
