These 10 days discourse is a precious gift from the man. Goenka provided a clear explaination on Vipassana meditation. If your familiar with a 10 day Vipassana course then you will remember these video tapes of Goenka. If you haven't done a 10 day sit then these videos may seem a little out of context but still helpful.
�There are three steps to the training given in a meditation course. First, one must abstain from any action, physical or vocal, which disturbs the peace and harmony of others. One cannot work to liberate oneself from impurities of the mind while at the same time continuing to perform deeds of body and speech which only multiply them. Therefore, a code of morality is the essential first step of the practice. One undertakes not to kill, not to steal, not to commit sexual misconduct, not to tell lies, and not to use intoxicants. By abstaining from such actions, one allows the mind to quiet down sufficiently in order to proceed further.
The next step is to develop some mastery over this wild mind by training it to remain fixed on a single object, the breath. One tries to keep one�s attention on the respiration for as long as possible. This is not a breathing exercise; one does not regulate the breath. Instead, one observes natural respiration as it is, as it comes in, as it goes out. In this way one further calms the mind so that it is no longer overpowered by intense negativities. At the same time, one is concentrating the mind, making it sharp and penetrating, capable of the work of insight.
These first two steps, living a moral life, and controlling the mind, are very necessary and beneficial in themselves, but they will lead to suppression of negativities unless one takes the third step: purifying the mind of defilements by developing insight into one�s own nature. This is Vipassana: experiencing one�s own reality by the systematic and dispassionate observation within oneself of the ever-changing mind-matter phenomenon manifesting itself as sensations. This is the culmination of the teaching of the Buddha: self-purification by self-observation.�

Doing Time, Doing Vipassana
"Doing Time, Doing Vipassana," a humane, lotus-scented documentary with a heavy spiritual agenda, tells the story of how an ancient Buddhist meditation technique that's similar but not identical to Zen has improved life for thousands of prisoners incarcerated in Tihar, India's largest prison. Kiran Bedi, the idealistic reformer who introduced Vipassana meditation into the complex of four jails in the suburbs of New Delhi, was appointed India's new inspector general of prisons in 1993 and introduced Vipassana to Tihar that year in a course offered to 100. It was so successful that the next year, enrollment was expanded to 1,000. Changing From Inside
This is a compelling account of an intensive pilot meditation program for inmates at a minimum security jail near Seattle, Washington. Under the guidance of both community volunteers and facility staff members, seven women inmates undertake ten days of total silence. They practice an ancient meditation technique called Vipassana for ten hours each day, delving ever deeper into themselves to understand and ultimately master the nature of their behaviors and compulsions. In the end, they are transformed by their inward journey and come away with tools to maintain that transformation.
Changing from Inside also chronicles the personal and professional journey of the articulate, determined facility director, Lucia Meijer, as she rallies her staff to this new and unconventional program.
Candid interviews among prison staff reveal a range of reactions, from interest to skepticism. However, the results prove an inspiration, leaving the facility transformed, as well.
