Hey all,
rounding up ALL the Tolkien I previously shared, this is all Tolkien that has been released on Audiobook.
Thanks as always appreciated. I've uploaded about 200GB of audiobooks here, many of the links have expired because people haven't said thanks.
The Silmarillion
Of all the audiobooks I have heard (and that's a lot), two readers stand supreme. Simon Winchester, reading his own work, and Martin Shaw reading the Silmarillion.
Shaw brings to Tolkien's reading a highly regarded professional actor's expertise without any hint of self-importance, as if Shaw is attempting to be worthy The Silmarillion.
The Silmarillion itself is my favourite of Tolkien's work. It is however a combined work, both of JRR and his son Christopher. And because the author himself never completed it despite 40 years of writing & revision it may be seen as flawed.
I believe those flaws are minor (and technical, relating to some linking of issues within). Not where near as popular as LoTR this is mainly because of content and tone. The content ranges across the history of the world of Middle Earth from prior to creation to the days following the War of the Ring and have enormous scope and list of dramatis personae, too many for many people on first attempt. The tone is markedly different from LoTR primarily in lacking a central narrative character and voice. I recommend the audio for people who experienced difficulty finding a way into the narrative.
It's a good few years since I ripped this, but I think everything is present and fine, with 128kbps, to capture the subtleties of Shaw's reading.
Tales From The Perilous Realm
Available for the first time in one volume, this is the definitive collection of Tolkien's five acclaimed modern classic 'fairie' tales in the vein of 'The Hobbit', fully corrected and reset for this edition and all beautifully illustrated in pencil by the award-winning artist, Alan Lee. The five tales are written with the same skill, quality and charm that made The Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their short lengths, they are finally together in a volume which reaffirms Tolkien's place as a master storyteller for readers young and old. / Roverandom is a toy dog who, enchanted by a sand sorcerer, gets to explore the world and encounter strange and fabulous creatures. / Farmer Giles of Ham is fat and unheroic, but - having unwittingly managed to scare off a short-sighted giant - is called upon to do battle when a dragon comes to town; / The Adventures of Tom Bombadil tells in verse of Tom's many adventures with hobbits, princesses, dwarves and trolls; / Leaf by Niggle recounts the strange adventures of the painter Niggle who sets out to paint the perfect tree; / Smith of Wootton Major journeys to the Land of Faery thanks to the magical ingredients of the Great Cake of the Feast of Good Children. This new collection is fully illustrated throughout by Oscar-winning artist, Alan Lee, who provides a wealth of pencil drawings to bring the stories to life as he did so memorably for The Hobbit and The Children of Hurin. Alan also provides an Afterword, in which he opens the door into illustrating Tolkien's world. World-renowned Tolkien author and expert, Tom Shippey, takes the reader through the hidden links in the tales to Tolkien's Middle-earth in his Introduction, and recounts their history and themes. Lastly, included as an appendix is Tolkien's most famous essay, "On Fairy-stories", in which he brilliantly discusses fairy-stories and their relationship to fantasy. Taken together, this rich collection of new and unknown work from the author of The Children of Hurin will provide the reader with a fascinating journey into lands as wild and strange as Middle-earth.
The Children Of Hurin
The first complete book by J.R.R. Tolkien in three decades--since the publication of The Silmarillion in 1977--The Children of Hrin reunites fans of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with Elves and Men, dragons and Dwarves, Eagles and Orcs. Presented for the first time as a complete, standalone story, this stirring narrative will appeal to casual fans and expert readers alike, returning them to the rich landscape and characters unique to Tolkien.
The Lord Of The Rings
When I ripped all 46 CDs of this back in the day, my primary concern was backing up my CDs but without having the space to go fully Lossless.
So I ripped it at 160-kbps MP3. Also, I ripped it to the original CD tracks to retain the original CD structure.
This may be usable if your DAP doesn't support bookmarking.
'One marvels anew at the depth, breadth and persistence of J.R.R. Tolkien's labour. No one sympathetic to his aims -- the invention of a secondary universe -- will want to miss this chance to be present at the creation.' Publishers Weekly 'Extraordinarily imaginative, and wholly exciting' The Times 'The story itself is superb' Observer 'A most remarkable feat' Guardian 'Masterpiece? Oh yes' Evening Standard An astonishing imaginative tour de force' Daily Telegraph 'A story magnificently told' New Statesman 'Tolkien was a storyteller of genius' Literary Review 'Amongst the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century' Sunday Telegraph.
This completely unabridged version of Lord of the Rings is brought vividly to life through an assured performance by Rob Inglis.
The Hobbit
An unabridged reading of the Hobbit. All my rips are unabridged unless otherwise stated. I dislike abridged works. However, in the case of the Hobbit, there are (were?) quite a few abridged versions floating around so I'm making it explicit this time.
Annals Of The Kings And Rulers
Tolkien "scholars" amongst you will recognise the Annals as an appendix from LOTR.
What you may not know (and I didn't until recently) was that the Annals was actaully released at one point as a stand-alone audiobook, read by rob Inglis. So I share here for the sake for completeness.
The Book Of Lost Tales 1 & 2

Ok, I got pretty excited myself when I found these as there's so little information about them, esp. that they even existed! Rips are (not mine) from cassette.
The Books of Lost Tales were released after the Book Of Unfinished Tales, I remember buying them around the late 80s. These are the first two books in the History Of Middle Earth series, edited by Christopher Tolkien. Quality is ok.
Unfinished Tales Of Numenor And Middle-Earth
Another rarity, is a cassette rip of Unfinished Tales, (therefore 32kbps & mono, not my rip) Quality is a bit "tinny" but ok.
Unfinished Tales preceded The Books Of Lost Tales, . It was the first in what was to become the posthumous History of Middle-Earth series, edited by Christopher Tolkien, of his fathers works.
"Unfinished Tales" is a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth to the end of the War of the Ring, and provides those who have read "The Lord of the Rings" with a whole collection of background and new stories from the twentieth century's most acclaimed popular author. The book concentrates on the realm of Middle-earth and comprises such elements as Gandalf's lively account of how it was that he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End, the emergence of the sea-god Ulmo before the eyes of Tuor on the coast of Beleriand, and an exact description of the military organization of the Riders of Rohan. "Unfinished Tales" also contains the only story about the long ages of Numenor before its downfall, and all that is known about such matters as the Five Wizards, the Palantiri and the legend of Amroth.
Personally, it's a book I remembering enjoying greatly when it was published.
The Hobbit (BBC Radio dramatization)
The show's production was complicated by the inclusion of multiple sound effects (often inserted live while recording the actors' performances), songs from the novel, and special sounds and electronic voice treatments created by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. All of the trolls, elves, goblins, wargs and eagles have treated voices, as does Gandalf when imitating the trolls.
The original master tapes for the series seem to have been wiped sometime during the 1970s. The reason is not clear, although it was rumoured to be due to a dispute with the Tolkien estate (if so, the subsequent recovery and commercial issue of the series proves that the dispute was resolved).
The BBC eventually recovered the series from a domestic off-air FM recording, apparently comprising 90- and 60-minute compilations edited together from the original episodes. The sound quality of these recordings is clear and legible, though it is noticeably inferior to a studio-quality recording and exhibits prominent tape hiss.
For broadcast and home audio purposes the BBC re-edited these compilations back into half-hour episodes, adding a brief snatch of the theme tune at the beginning and end of each. The title The Hobbit is spoken only at the beginning of the first episode and there are no opening or closing credits. It is quite likely that the credits were never included in the episodes themselves, but would originally have been read by a continuity announcer at the end of each episode.
The lack of credits makes it difficult to establish the names of the actors who played all the roles.
