Fred Kelemen - Krisana aka Fallen (2005)

"Krisana" follows Matiss, a lonely Latvian archivist, as he tries to learn about a woman who he didn't try to stop from jumping off a bridge, as well as her reasons for doing so. That's the plot in a nutshell, but this film is not concerned with story as much it is in depicting the guilt of a man who failed to act. As a detective who investigates the incident tells him, “we usually don't bother to care about the anonymous faces we pass every day until after they die. “





The combination of the superb black and white photography and the 'Eugene Onegin with a twist' plot made this a real knock out for me. The atmosphere created by the mostly very dark shots contrasted with occasional very bright overexposed white was gripping. There was a superb moment where where transparencies - apparently conventional holiday snaps but where the faces of the actors revealed character and situation subtly but instantly - were shown accompanied by Lensky's heart-wrenching aria from the Tschaikowsky opera Eugene Onegin. For me the mark of a good film is that it should take advantage of the opportunities presented by that medium, which means that often the story is less important than imagery and atmosphere - Last Year in Marienbad is a good example of such a film. La caída
Una noche, Matiss Zelcs, empleado del Archivo Nacional de Letonia, encuentra en Riga a una mujer al borde de un puente. Luego de pasar a su lado sin intervenir en el salto de la mujer hacia las profundidades, se queda con una profunda sensación de culpa. No puede olvidarse de ella. Impulsado por su malestar, busca por toda la ciudad rastros de su existencia. Este viaje a través del caos de su conciencia lo lleva a bucear en su propia soledad, mientras se involucra en el destino de la mujer y de la gente relacionada con ella. Alors qu'il rentre chez lui un soir, Matiss Zelcs, un archiviste de Riga, passe à côté d'une femme seule, arrêtée sur un pont. Quelques instants plus tard, il entend un splash et une plainte déchirante. Il se retourne, ausculte l'obscurité et ne découvre rien. Quelques photos et des lettres d'amour inachevées dans une poubelle poussent Matiss sur les traces de la disparue, à la recherche d'indices sur ce qu'a pu être son existence et ce qui l'a conduite à y mettre un terme.
Dans un noir et blanc contrasté et élégant, l'allemand Fred Kelemen construit son intrigue sur le canevas d'un faux film noir, d'un mystère qu'il ne cherche jamais vraiment à résoudre. Sombre, baigné par une bande originale qui ajoute encore au malaise ambiant, cette expérience esthétique hors du commun est un véritable puzzle intellectuel assorti d'un twist final qui déstabilisera un peu plus le spectateur habitué à des oeuvres plus conviviales. Прогуливаясь поздним вечером вдоль берега реки, молодой человек стал случайным свидетелем самоубийства женщины. Первым порывом было пройти мимо, потом чувство сострадания взяло вверх, но женщина уже была мертва. Матисс Зелчс дал показания полиции. Можно было бы поставить точку, но молодого человека взволновала судьба этой женщины, ему захотелось избавиться от мук совести.
