Angela Schanelec - Marseille (2004)

Marseille describes an interlude in the life of young Berlin photographer Sophie. Wanting a change, Sophie does an apartment swap, so she can go photograph the city of Marseilles, and most of all get away from Berlin. Once there, she meets people, adapts to her new environment, and enjoys herself. On her return home, however, little has changed and she finds it hard to accept the old routine and the messiness of her love life.





This is a beautifully filmed portrait of different people in Berlin and a young woman in Marseille. More little scenes than a story. Very atmospheric and melancholy. The best film from Angela Schanelec so far. In the first half we follow Sophie a German woman in Marseille on her ways through the city. While the second half is set in Berlin with scenes out of the life of an actress and a photographer. Every dialog is very well written and has a subtle sense of humor, which was often missing in the earlier films of Schanelec. But still there a long scenes and repetition even if the overall atmosphere is amazing. Maren Eggert as Sophie gives a wonderful performance. New German wave cinema at its best. (IMDB comment)





Sophie, estudiante de fotografía, cambia su apartamento con un estudiante de Marsella. Allí toma fotos y conoce a un mecánico. Regresa a Alemania donde se encuentra Ivan, un antiguo amor. Como este no se le declara, decide volver de nuevo a Marsella.



Sophie est une jeune photographe allemande. Elle fait un échange d'appartement avec une étudiante à Marseille. Sur place, elle fait la rencontre d'un mécanicien avec qui elle passe une soirée dans un bar. De retour à Berlin, elle retrouve tout ce qu'elle y avait laissé et un tissu relationnel inchangé : l'amour qu'elle éprouve pour Ivan, le mari de sa meilleure amie Hanna, demeure inexprimé. Sophie reste en marge et retourne à Marseille...
