A new series revealing the stories behind iconic artefacts from the Indian Subcontinent.
Episode 1: Tippoo's Tiger
One of the most extraordinary and renowned objects in the Victoria and Albert museum is a life-sized wooden model of a tiger ferociously mauling a male figure. Originally owned by the Sultan of Mysore, it reveals much about his obsession with tigers and his opposition to the encroaching British in the 1790s.
Episode 2: The Great Stupa Sculptures
This edition examines a collection of stone carvings which originally adorned a vast Buddhist monument in ancient India. Now housed in the British Museum, these intricately-carved stones narrowly avoided being used as building materials until a Scottish surveyor intervened.
Episode 3: Shiva and Parvati Seated on a Terrace
The Hindu god Shiva and his partner Parvati are the subjects of an exquisite miniature painting, crammed with detail. It was bought by a British army officer in India at the end of the 18th century and dates from a time when two great nations met as equals.
Episode 4: The Golden Throne
This edition examines a golden ceremonial throne made for the Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Punjab by Indian craftsmen in the 19th century. Now housed in the V & A museum, it still exudes a sense of the power of the man who once ruled from it.
Episode 5: The Hamzanama
One of the great masterpieces of Mughal art, the 16th century Hamzanama paintings took 15 years to complete and were commissioned by Akbar, 13-year-old boy who was to become one of the greatest rulers in history. Of the original 1,400 paintings, just a precious few remain to demonstrate the extraordinary skills of the Iranian and Indian painters who created them.
Episode 6: The Tara Statue
This edition takes a look at the near life-size bronze statue of the Buddhist goddess Tara, which has long been one of the most striking and memorable exhibits in the Asia gallery of the British Museum. Discovered in Sri Lanka, the statue made an extraordinary journey back to Britain via the country home Sir Robert Brownrigg.
